Finding Your Way Home: The Growing Interest in Barbadian Citizenship and Residency

At CACHARLES + CO., we’ve noticed a remarkable upsurge in clients asking about residency and citizenship in Barbados. From Barbadians abroad yearning to reconnect with their roots, to individuals looking for security in a changing world, the message is clear — more people than ever want to plant roots right here in our island paradise.

Why this renewed interest? It could be the global uncertainty that’s leaving many looking for a stable and welcoming place to call home. It could be the warm invitation of initiatives like “We Gatherin’ 2025”, which calls on Barbadians across the diaspora to come home and help build our future together. Or maybe, for some, it’s simply a deep, unshakable desire to reclaim the spirit and heritage that comes with being Bajan.

A New Chapter for Citizenship by Descent

One of the biggest trends we’ve seen is a steady rise in inquiries about citizenship by descent. Under Barbados’ current laws, citizenship by descent is available only for children born overseas to Barbadian born parents — but it does not yet extend to grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

This expansion has been discussed by the Government since as far back as 2019, but unfortunately there has been no concrete follow-up — and now, in 2025, many believe the call for this change is louder and more urgent than ever before.

Why Expand Citizenship?

The proposed expansion — allowing grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Barbadian citizens to claim citizenship — is part of a broader vision to address declining population trends and reconnect with our far-reaching diaspora.

By making it easier for descendants of Barbadians to obtain citizenship, the nation hopes to:

  • Encourage young, skilled individuals to live and work in Barbados.

  • Strengthen family ties that span continents.

  • Inspire investment and fresh energy into our communities and economy.

What’s Next?

While the idea has been on the table since 2019, the specifics and timeline for implementation are still unclear. But momentum is building. If you believe in this change — or could benefit from it — now is the time to get informed, trace your family lineage, gather your documents, and speak with trusted advisors.

Here’s what you should know for now:

  • Barbados follows jus sanguinis (citizenship by descent).

  • Dual citizenship is allowed — you don’t have to give up your current nationality to become Barbadian.

  • Naturalisation and Registration remains an option for those who qualify through residency.

  • Other potential reforms include shorter residency requirements for permanent residents and spouses, CARICOM Skilled Nationals and a merit-based citizenship path for those with highly desirable skills or investments.
